We had a literacy night at school 2 weeks ago and I learned from this experience to never email back your principal when she asks for help from the faculty. I got put in charge of the story hour which wasn't a big deal I just don't need her to see me doing all these things and putting me on more committees! For our handwriting in my class we read the story If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and then got to choose their own animals to write about. Some included giving cats peanut butter sandwiches, Cheetahs hot cheetos, whale a hot dog, horse some milk and many more funny stories! My kiddos can be so creative.
I was sitting in the library listening to teachers read book and a couple of my favorite kids came in and sat with me. One little boy had a cell phone in his hand and he told me that he got it from his dad before he went to jail. So that right there brought a tear to my eye, not being able to imagine what this little boy's home life is like. Then he wanted to show me the book that he bought at the book fair....Hero Dad. That brought on even more tears. As I sat contemplating all the things we had just discussed made my heart hurt for this little boy. I do not know the story of his dad, but either this boy wants a dad that he can look up to and call his hero, or he has a dad that he does look up to but us not making good choices in landing himself in jail. Those are the kind of role models you want to send these children home to.
Before my 3 little boys got up to leave they all gave me a big hug and said they loved me before leaving. I sat and watched as they walked away and knew that I am at the school for a reason and no matter how hard it is on a daily basis, I love my children more than I ever thought I could. I only want them to know that they can succeed in life if they just try and don't drop out or get caught up in gangs. I fear for their future but know that I am doing my best that I can while I have them with me right now.
